4. SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Aïcha Ismail Wazir, Sudanese Refugee:
“Food rations are no longer sufficient, and only some of us benefit from them. We need more water, healthcare, and education. The number of refugees has increased, and humanitarian aid is insufficient. Mothers with babies are the most vulnerable.”

5. Various shots, Kelly Clements, UNHCR Deputy High Commissioner, meets
with refugees from El-Fasher
6. SOUNDBITE (English) Kelly Clements, UDeputy High Commissioner, NHCR
“The stories that I've heard today of what happened in El Fasher just two years ago, and those families that fled the circumstances at that time has resurrected a trauma that we can only imagine the harrowing experiences that people are fleeing, from El Fasher today. It's a city that had been under siege for 500 days. These are people in desperate need. And they're also, people that are arriving to Chad that need everything from a safe place to be, to shelter, to clean water, to an ability to be able to restart their lives. Chad has opened their borders and been hospitable hosts now for many decades to refugees not just from Sudan but across the region. But they need help. They need our continued support as UN, the UN refugee agency, as other partners are trying to provide more support in places like eastern Chad. This is where we need the international community's continued and even increased support to be able to do much more here in Chad, but also to try to reach those communities in need inside Darfur.”

Storyline

UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, is deeply concerned about the escalating, brutal violence in El Fasher, the capital of Sudan’s North Darfur region. Reports indicate that the Rapid Support Forces have moved into the city, triggering widespread fear among families with reports of both targeted and indiscriminate executions of civilians and egregious human rights violations, who have survived 500 days of relentless siege and conflict.

An estimated 70,000 people have fled El Fasher in recent days, with more people expected to flee in the coming days and weeks, including across the border to Chad, where UNHCR and partners are ready to assist new arrivals. Many remain trapped inside the city with few options to flee due to ongoing fighting, lack of safe corridors, or restrictions on movement.

Chad has become a critical refuge for those fleeing the Sudan conflict, now hosting over 1.2 million refugees, mostly from Darfur. Communities continue to welcome those in need despite immense strain on local resources.

With escalating violence in El Fasher, another major influx into Chad is anticipated, placing additional pressure on already overstretched services and host communities. Funding shortfalls are severely hampering the response.
