Storyline

At the opening plenary of COP30 in Belém, Brazil, today (10 Nov) United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) Executive Secretary Simon Stiell said the Paris Agreement “is working to deliver real progress,” but called on nations to “strive valiantly for more.”

Ten years ago in Paris, Stiell said, "we were designing the future – a future that would clearly see the curve of emissions bend downwards,” adding, “colleagues - Welcome to that future.”

He noted that according to scientists, “we can and must bring temperatures back down to 1.5C after any temporary overshoot,” and said, “lamenting is not a strategy. We need solutions.”

Stiell called for accelerated implementation, and said, “we have already agreed that we will transition away from fossil fuels. Now’s the time to focus on how we do it fairly and orderly. Focusing on which deals to strike, to accelerate the tripling of renewables and doubling energy efficiency.”

He told delegates, “in this arena of COP30, your job here is not to fight one another – your job here is to fight this climate crisis, together.”

The UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) released its latest numbers updating the recent Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) Synthesis report. It shows that new NDCs, including many received in recent days, will reduce emissions by 12 percent in 2035.

The UNFCCC highlighted that every fraction of a degree of heating avoided will save millions of lives and billions of dollars in climate damages.
