"Today, I am here at Al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza City. This used to be one of the largest maternity hospitals in the entire Gaza Strip, and today, as you can see behind me, it is all in ruins. But it is still persistent, it is still functional. I had meetings with the doctors, and however partial functional it is, it is providing great services to women and girls. UNFPA has been with the Gaza Strip population ever since the start of the war, and we have never left. We have supported hospitals and primary healthcare facilities, and as we speak today, we continue to support 22 healthcare facilities, including five major hospitals, like Al-Shifa. We believe our support has helped. We witnessed 130 deliveries that we support, 98 percent of these deliveries take place in health facilities. However, we are concerned that, as we speak, 18 of these deliveries are actually taking place outside health institutions, and that is our main concern. What are we doing as UNFPA? We continue to bring in medical equipment and supplies, we continue to deploy midwives. As we speak, 175 midwives are deployed across the Gaza Strip. We will continue to bring in medicines from around the world until the situation is able to reach 100 percent of deliveries in Gaza.”

The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) in Palestine has continued to support the people of the Gaza Strip since the beginning of the war, with a particular focus on providing healthcare services for women and girls.
During his inspection tour of UNFPA projects at Al-Shifa Medical Complex, Nestor Owomuhangi, UNFPA representative in Palestine, said: "We continue to bring in medical equipment and supplies and deploy midwives to ensure the provision of childbirth services and essential healthcare despite the difficult circumstances."
The Fund currently supports 22 health facilities across the Gaza Strip, including five major hospitals, among them Al-Shifa, one of the largest hospitals in Gaza.
Footage from Al-Shifa shows the scale of destruction to its buildings and infrastructure; yet the hospital continues to operate partially, providing essential medical services.
UNFPA is also expanding its services by deploying 175 midwives across the Gaza Strip while continuing to deliver medicines and medical equipment from around the world, ensuring that healthcare facilities can meet the needs of all women and girls in Gaza.
