3. SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Salem Farajallah, displaced from Al-Qarara, currently living in Khan Younis:
“Winter is as you can see, I have had my trousers rolled up since the early morning looking like this, water is coming from everywhere, it comes from the neighbours, it’s rushing down from above, and the water pooling is right here next to me. If I were to open the tent from that corner, I would basically find water and my mattress right next to it.”

6. Wide shot, tents next to the sea, as the rain begins

8. SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Umm Muhammad, displaced from north Gaza, currently living in Khan Younis:
“The situation is terrible here, the water is dumping the hill’s sand on us, and I am sick with a slipped disc in my back as well. Neither me or my children are able to sleep in this situation: bare ground and the weather is extremely cold.”
9. Various shots, rain falling on a makeshift tent, displacing dirt and mud as it falls.
10. SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Umm Muhammad, displaced from north Gaza, currently living in Khan Younis:
“We can’t take care of our children anymore, we have them inside the tent but the tent is flooded with rainwater, I swear to God they are all sick; my little boy is always coughing, and the little girl and my grandchildren are also sick, I am terribly sick as well. We have no clothes nor clothes for the kids to change into from their wet ones. There's nothing. Honestly, the situation here is terrible. Even in other areas, many regions are flooded because of the hills; the hills are collapsing, and we're suffering terribly.”
11. Wide shot, two young boys standing inside a tent as the rain falls
12. Close up, a stream of water running towards the camera

“What we are supposed to do? what are we supposed to do? Take a look; it’s been raining since eleven o’clock, and we have children here, and my daughter is sick.”

Storyline

Storm Byron has struck Gaza with force, deepening the suffering of already displaced families. The cold, rainy winter has set in, leaving people even more vulnerable to disease amid compromised water and sanitation systems.

Thousands of families are sheltering in low-lying or debris-filled coastal areas with no drainage or protective barriers. Along the Khan Younis shoreline alone, more than 4,000 people are living in high-risk zones. Of these, around 1,000 people directly exposed to wave-impact lines are being prioritized for evacuation with UN support.

At least 10 people have reportedly died in the past 24 hours due to heavy rains, underscoring the life-threatening conditions faced by families with nowhere safe to go.

Winter conditions, combined with poor water and sanitation, are expected to drive a surge in acute respiratory infections, including influenza as well as hepatitis and diarrheal diseases. Children, older people, and those with chronic illnesses remain at greatest risk.
