"The conditions here are very difficult. We have no sanitary facilities. We have no food or firewood. We also have no water, so it is impossible to wash. We spend the night under the stars, sleeping on the ground. For example, yesterday we slept in the rain. For now, we still haven't eaten. We are hungry. I tried to get by begging here and there. I was lucky enough to meet a man who gave me a packet of cassava leaves. I peeled and pounded them with the mortar he lent me."

16. SOUNDBITE (French) Brigitte Mukanga-Eno, UNHCR Burundi Representative:
“We started receiving refugees from the DRC on Friday, December 5. Since then, we have already exceeded 40,000 people in just one week. This is simply because there has been very serious fighting on the Congolese side. It started in Kamanyola, and we saw many people crossing over to seek safety in Burundi. They came from Sange, but also from Katogota. As you can see, there are many children, elderly people, sick people, and people who have been injured by everything that has happened in Congo. So the UNHCR and the entire United Nations systemin Burundi are trying to organize temporary assistance. This has just begun, and a large number of people have arrived in just a few days.”

Storyline

Since 1 December, South Kivu Province has witnessed the most significant escalation of hostilities in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) since early 2025. The escalation has triggered new large-scale displacement within DRC and to Burundi. Around 64,000 refugees have already arrived in Burundi, and the influx is expected to continue. Vulnerabilities among new arrivals include urgent medical needs, shelter provision, the presence of unaccompanied or separated children, and a high percentage of women at risk.

In Burundi, UNHCR is working closely with authorities and partners to rapidly scale up protection, and operational capacity to address the urgent needs of new arrivals, including life-saving assistance, expanding reception facilities and protection monitoring and services.
