Storyline

Incidents of damaged houses collapsing in the Gaza Strip have increased in recent days amid worsening weather conditions and heavy rainfall, as residents face severe shortages in resources and a lack of safe housing alternatives.

Mahmoud Al-Saqqa stands in front of what remains of his collapsed home in western Gaza City, where he and his relatives have been forced to live in a single room after the building was damaged by shelling. Al-Saqqa said that three families, totaling 12 people, are currently living in that one room. He added, “We were forced to live here because there is nowhere else to go.”

Al-Saqqa explained that fear accompanies the family with every new wave of rain, “when we hear about a house collapsing on its residents because of the rain, we go to sleep feeling uneasy, because our home is also at risk of collapse. We fear for our children and our elderly from this situation.”

In a similar incident, Alaa Al-Hasri was inspecting the rubble of his house, which collapsed due to severe weather conditions. He said the house fell suddenly while he and his wife were away buying food, as their children were about to go down the building’s staircase. He added, “If my children had been killed, who would have compensated me for them? My children are my soul in this life. Now we have nothing left—no clothes, no blankets. Even the water containers that we bring from a far distance were lost.”

For his part, Abu Rami Al-Hasri, a relative of the family, said that displacement camps are completely overcrowded and offer no protection from the rain.

He added, “We live in a camp, but water floods into our shelters. We don’t know where to go, so we were forced to return to our destroyed home. Some people may end up living under staircases.” Abu Rami called on Arab countries to pay attention to the humanitarian conditions in the Gaza Strip.

At the same site, Karima Al-Hasri was searching through the rubble for whatever remained of the family’s belongings. She said her children were struck with terror when the building suddenly collapsed as they were preparing to fetch drinking water. She added, “When we arrived, we found the house completely collapsed.”

The Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) warned that needs continue to outpace the ability of humanitarians to respond, given the ongoing impediments they face in the Strip. Rainstorms and colder temperatures are also exacerbating the situation across the Strip.

In the ongoing effort to provide winterization support, the UN has been distributing packages of essential items – including food aid, hygiene materials and shelter supplies – to help weather future storms and support people after the latest rains. Between Thursday (11 Dec) and Saturday (13 Dec), UN partners working on improving access to dignified shelter delivered 3,800 tents, nearly 4,600 tarpaulins, and thousands of bedding items to some 4,800 families.

UN partners are also working to address the growing risks of hypothermia in newborns, with tailored kits that are locally procured and prepared for distribution. These kits will be provided to mothers and caregivers with newborn and very young children.
