“Our report details killings, rape and torture and other violations that were committed during the three-day offensive on the Zamzam IDP camp by the Rapid Support Forces in April this year. Over 1,000 civilians were killed, 319 of them summarily executed – some in their homes, and others in the main market, in schools, health facilities and mosques. And more than 400,000 people were displaced once again. Such deliberate killing of civilians or persons hors de combat may constitute the war crime of murder. There must be an impartial, thorough and effective investigation into the attack on the camp, and those responsible for serious violations of international law must be punished. At least 104 people, including 75 women, 26 girls and 3 boys, most of them from the Zaghawa ethnic group, were subjected to gruesome sexual violence, including rape and gangrape, and sexual slavery. Sexual violence appears to have been deliberately used to inflict terror on the community. These horrific patterns of violations – committed with impunity – are consistent with what my Office has repeatedly documented, including during the RSF takeover of El Fasher in late October. The world must not sit back and watch as such cruelty becomes entrenched as the order of the day in Sudan. All States, particularly those with influence on the situation, must do all in their power to prevent atrocities, and lend their collective support to diplomatic efforts toward a ceasefire and a durable resolution to the conflict.”

Volker Türk, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, made the following statement on the violations that were committed by the RSF in the Zamzam IDP camp, last April.
