Storyline

As the new year begins, residents of the Gaza Strip continue to face harsh living conditions in displacement camps and among the rubble of their destroyed homes, amid deep uncertainty over their future after months of war and devastation.

Displaced Palestinians living in temporary shelters express hope that the new year will mark a turning point in their lives, allowing them to achieve stability and regain a sense of safety after enduring prolonged hardship caused by the lack of adequate shelter and basic services.

Umm Rabee’ Al-Malash, a displaced woman standing in front of her tent at one of Gaza’s camps, said, “the Palestinian people must be supported, as they have endured immense suffering. Help us rebuild the Gaza Strip, bring about peace, and allow us to have a state where we can live in peace and security.”

For her part, Wafaa Al-Khawaja voiced concern for the future of children, saying, “I wish that, just as the rest of the world lives, we could live the same way. Our children today have no education or anything else.”

Meanwhile, Kamal Abu Hsheish, a displaced resident from the Jabalia camp in northern Gaza, said his only wish is to return to the life he led before the war, as daily realities continue to impose severe humanitarian conditions on thousands of families inside the camps.

Hundreds of thousands of residents are estimated to remain displaced, amid mounting challenges facing relief and reconstruction efforts, as the population of the Gaza Strip awaits what the new year may bring in terms of humanitarian and political developments.
