“My message to UNIFIL peacekeepers is a message of gratitude, a message of support, a message of appreciation from all of us in New York for what they're doing. They are continuing with the implementation of their mandate. They are doing all of this in very challenging circumstances, in a difficult and dangerous environment. They also have to deal with the financial constraints and the impact of the savings that have to be operationalized at UNIFIL as well as with other missions. So that's the key message, a message of support, gratitude and appreciation. At the same time, we have to work and we're currently working on the request from the Security Council regarding what options, regarding UN support to the implementation of Resolution 1701 after the end of the mandate of UNIFIL. So that is also something that we're discussing with colleagues at UNIFIL as well as with the Lebanese authorities. I think one of the key messages that we're hearing from the Lebanese authorities is an expression of support and gratitude to UNIFIL and to the UN. I think that's very important to register. The second message is what can we do together to come up to the Security Council with credible and effective options in terms of how the UN could support the continuous implementation of Resolution 1701 after the 31st of December 2026, which is where the mandate of UNIFIL will end. It’s a work in progress. We have a number of ideas. What I detect from my discussions with the interlocutors here in Beirut is an expression of interest for the continuation of a UN presence for the purpose of supporting continuous efforts to implement Resolution 1701. There has been already a lot of progress made, but we have to make sure that we continue supporting Lebanon in this process.”
Under-Secretary-General for Peace Operations, Jean-Pierre Lacroix is continuing his visit to the Middle East.
Today (07 Jan) in Beirut, he met with senior Lebanese officials, including the President Joseph Aoun, the Prime Minister Nawaf Salam, the Minister of Foreign Affairs Youssef Rajji, and the Speaker of the Parliament Nabih Berri. Discussions during these meetings focused on UNIFIL’s support to the Lebanese authorities in sustaining the cessation of hostilities.
USG Lacroix also met with Lebanese Armed Forces Commander General Rodolphe Haykal, and they also discussed the ongoing redeployment of the armed forces in the south and how UNIFIL can continue supporting implementation of Security Council resolution 1701.
Yesterday (06 Jan), USG Lacroix was in southern Lebanon, where he witnessed firsthand the extensive destruction left by the hostilities in southern Lebanon. He urged all parties to respect the 2024 cessation of hostilities agreement, and to enable civilians to return safely and allow UNIFIL to carry out its mandate.
