“On Ukraine, as my Prime Minister said, we are closer to peace than ever before. We continue to support President Trump and President Zelensky in their pursuit of a just peace for Ukraine. Ukraine has shown it's the party of peace, while Russia continues to block progress and terrorize Ukraine and its people.”

8. SOUNDBITE (English) James Kariuki, Chargé d’Affaires, Permanent Mission to the United Nations, United Kingdom:
“The brutal conflict and humanitarian disaster in Sudan remain an urgent priority for the United Kingdom. We are working tirelessly using every diplomatic tool at our disposal to push the parties to agree a ceasefire to end this devastating war. That's why I will use our presidency this month and the mandated Council meeting on Sudan on the 19th of February to focus on the desperate need to alleviate the suffering, protect civilians and end the catastrophic fighting.”

10. SOUNDBITE (English) James Kariuki, Chargé d’Affaires, Permanent Mission to the United Nations, United Kingdom:
“We strongly support the 20-point plan for Gaza that President Trump set out in September, endorsed by the Security Council in November in Resolution 2803. That plan is what has achieved the ceasefire in Gaza, the return of all the hostages who were left alive, and at long last, the return of all the remains of hostages who were killed.”

12. SOUNDBITE (English) James Kariuki, Chargé d’Affaires, Permanent Mission to the United Nations, United Kingdom:
“We've been very clear that everybody must fulfil their commitments under the ceasefire plan that was agreed last year. And the Council, through its resolution 2803, endorsed that peace plan, that 20-point plan, and we will need to comply with it.”

14. SOUNDBITE (English) James Kariuki, Chargé d’Affaires, Permanent Mission to the United Nations, United Kingdom:
“We believe in diplomacy to prevent Iran acquiring a nuclear weapon. That's why we went into the JCPoA. It's also why we triggered snapback back in August, which was then agreed by the whole Council in September because we, along with our, E3 partners, France and Germany, were concerned about Iran's claim noncompliance.”
15. Wide shot, end of briefing
Briefing journalists in New York, British Ambassador James Kariuki today (2 Feb) condemned the terrorist attacks across Pakistan’s Baluchistan region and commented on the situations in Ukraine, Sudan, Gaza and Iran.
According to press reports, coordinated attacks killed at least 33 people in the region over the weekend.
Kariuki said, “we stand with Pakistan in rejecting terrorism and in our shared commitment to peace and security.”
Turning to Ukraine, the Ambassador said, “we are closer to peace than ever before. We continue to support President Trump and President Zelensky in their pursuit of a just peace for Ukraine. Ukraine has shown it's the party of peace, while Russia continues to block progress and terrorize Ukraine and its people.”
On “the brutal conflict and humanitarian disaster in Sudan,” he said, “we are working tirelessly using every diplomatic tool at our disposal to push the parties to agree a ceasefire to end this devastating war.”
Kariuki noted that during the UK’s presidency of the Security Council this month, there will be a meeting on Sudan on 19 February “to focus on the desperate need to alleviate the suffering, protect civilians and end the catastrophic fighting.”
On Gaza, he said, “we strongly support the 20-point plan for Gaza that President Trump set out in September, endorsed by the Security Council in November in Resolution 2803. That plan is what has achieved the ceasefire in Gaza, the return of all the hostages who were left alive, and at long last, the return of all the remains of hostages who were killed.”
Asked about the continued killing of Palestinian civilians in Gaza, Kariuki said, “we've been very clear that everybody must fulfil their commitments under the ceasefire plan that was agreed last year. And the Council, through its resolution 2803, endorsed that peace plan, that 20-point plan, and we will need to comply with it.”
Asked about current discussions between the United States and Iran on its nuclear programme, he said, “we believe in diplomacy to prevent Iran acquiring a nuclear weapon.”
The Ambassador said that was the reason why the UK went into the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action
(JCPoA) also known as the Iran Nuclear Deal, adding that “it's also why we triggered snapback back in August, which was then agreed by the whole Council in September because we, along with our, E3 partners, France and Germany, were concerned about Iran's claim noncompliance.”
