Storyline

Riyad Mansour, Permanent Observer of Palestine to the United Nations delivered a joint statement on behalf of Arab states in order to express "outrage and condemnation" in regards of a recent Israeli cabinet decision, warning the move would amount to “the annexation of the land of the Palestinian people, especially in the West Bank.”

Speaking to reporters in New York today (10 Feb), Mansour said Israel’s decision represented an illegal step that must be immediately reversed. He said Palestinian officials were mobilizing “all components of the UN, beginning with the Security Council,” to respond.

Mansour said that, following instructions from Palestinian leaders, his office began circulating a letter to the Security Council, the Secretary-General, and the President of the General Assembly outlining “the details of our position and what we want.”

He said he delivered the letter in person to the President of the Security Council and called on the body to “shoulder its responsibility to defend international law, including human rights law and humanitarian law,” and to act to force Israel to respect Security Council resolutions, including resolutions 2334 and 2803, and to reverse what he described as an illegal step.

Speaking on behalf of the Arab Group, Syria’s UN ambassador Ibrahim Olabi said the group condemned “in the strongest terms the illegal Israeli decision and measures aimed at imposing unlawful Israeli sovereignty” in the occupied West Bank.

Olabi said the measures sought to entrench settlement activity and impose a new legal and administrative reality that accelerates attempts at illegal annexation and the displacement of Palestinians. He said the group reaffirmed that Israel has no sovereignty over occupied Palestinian territory and warned that continued expansionist policies contribute to fueling violence and conflict in the region.

Türkiye’s UN ambassador Ahmet Yıldız, speaking for the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, also condemned Israel’s actions, saying the OIC Group rejected measures aimed at imposing unlawful sovereignty and enforcing a new legal and administrative reality in the occupied West Bank.
