When people outside UNMISS ask me, I ask them would you care to spend two hours with me and recount what would have happened if we were not there. Then give me two hours to tell you what we have done and at the end if you don’t go back with a salute to UNMISS then I will change my name.”

Storyline

Lieutenant General Mohan Subramanian today (26 Feb) stepped out for his final Honor Guard inspection in Juba, the final movement in a 40-year career that began with the Indian Army in 1986.

Subramanian departs, not just as a high-ranking UN official, but as a leader who prioritized community partnerships.

Not only was this his final Honour Guard inspection as UNMISS’ top military leader, but it also marked the end of a remarkable 40-year career in service with the Indian Army.

During his time in South Sudan, Lt-Gen Subramanian travelled extensively to the country’s most volatile regions, working alongside his peacekeepers to ensure UNMISS delivered on its mandate to protect civilians.

Military, police, and civilian colleagues gathered at the UNMISS Headquarters in Juba to bid farewell to a respected leader, as he reflected on the privilege of serving the people of South Sudan.

In his final message, Force Commander Subramanian reminded peacekeepers of the importance of their work at a time when the need for peacekeeping is greater than ever.

His transition from a young officer to the top military officer in an integrated UN Peacekeeping mission has been defined by a steady hand in turbulent times. Since 2022, Force Commander Subramanian has navigated South Sudan’s most difficult moments, from the devastation of historic flooding to the persistent threat of violence.
