In Gaza City, exhausted by war and displacement, children try to carve out narrow spaces to play among crowded tents and ruined homes, while their view of the future is shaped by the destruction surrounding them on all sides.
Near the fishermen’s boats at Gaza Port, children sit exchanging small talk and chasing brightly colored kites, while others play traditional games in narrow alleys between the displaced families’ tents.
Close to the remains of collapsed concrete walls, some play atop the ruins of their former homes. Behind their laughter and shouts, the buzzing of surveillance drones is almost constant, creating a scene where the sounds of childhood blend with the noise of war.
Qassem Adwan, a child displaced from Jabalia refugee camp in the north of the Strip to Gaza City, said: “I was happy before the war. Now there is nothing good here, and I am not happy.”
Amal Suhweil, displaced from Beit Hanoun, described the future as unclear. She added: “I see that the future here in Gaza City is unclear. Our lives in our homes were more beautiful; we used to play inside our houses, not in the street like we do now. We play in the street, and we have been burned by the sun and soaked by the rain. Life here is very difficult.”
In one of the alleys among the tents, Ghadeer Saleh, displaced from Beit Lahia, said: “Our situation now is zero. In the future, we hope to God that things will be better, that reconstruction will take place, and that the destruction we live among will be removed.”
Rafif Al-Zaanin, from Beit Hanoun, shared: “The future of the country here is destruction, and we hope to God that it will improve for the better.”
Lama Saqr, also from Beit Hanoun, expressed a specific wish to return home: “I wish to return to Beit Hanoun, to our home, and that everyone would leave us alone, and that nothing would happen again in Beit Hanoun. I wish to return to our home in Beit Hanoun.”
As children sometimes run barefoot over sand and rubble, Mena Qaddoura, displaced from Jabalia, said: “I call on the countries of the world to help us find mobile homes, to rebuild our houses, and to remove all this rubble. Now rats have multiplied among the debris. I wish we could have homes. Is it acceptable for some people to live in houses while others live in tents under the heat of the sun? That is all I wish for.”
In another area, children play among the remains of collapsed concrete walls. Mohannad Saadat, displaced from Beit Hanoun, said: “Our future… there is no future. I do not see any future. All this destruction that happened in Gaza, and no one stood with us. The scale of destruction is huge. There are no schools, no hospitals, no ambulances, and no education either.”
Nihad Jundiya, displaced from the Shujaiya neighborhood in eastern Gaza to the west, said: “Whenever I go out, I see houses collapsed, streets destroyed, and rubble everywhere. I wish I could go to the rubble of our home and retrieve many of our belongings from it.”
