During her visit to South Sudan, Najla Nassif Palma, the United Nations Victims’ Rights Advocate, aimed to enhance support for victims of sexual exploitation and abuse by assessing current practices, identifying gaps, and providing recommendations. While on the ground, Assistant Secretary-General Palma met with government officials, local communities and UN staff.
On her second trip to South Sudan, UN Victim Rights Advocate Najla Nassif Palma
highlighted the UN's commitment to upholding the rights of survivors of sexual exploitation and abuse.
She said, “my role is to ensure that they have a voice, assistance, and justice, and I work with UN entities to advise, to guide, to support them, how we can advance, how we can improve, how we can be better.”
Assistant Secretary-General Palma engaged with high-level government officials, local communities UN staff.
Palma said, “My visit is to understand, explore ways that we can work together to advance networks of support, but as well to advance justice for victims of sexual exploitation and abuse.”
In all her interactions, the Victims’ Rights Advocate emphasized the need for a better understanding of the challenges faced by survivors and the importance of collaborative support for them.
She said, “I am here to support, to support the government, to build networks of support for the victims, and as well to build avenues, explore avenues to access to justice for them, then together, we can put victims' rights first.
Her final message was that there is zero tolerance for misconduct, specifically sexual exploitation and abuse, and all UN peacekeepers must uphold the highest standards of the UN Charter
Palma reiterated, “the United Nations does not tolerate sexual exploitation and abuse. If you are a victim or if you know someone who is a victim, come forward, talk to us. Because the United Nations is only as strong as the values we uphold.”
