9. SOUNDBITE (English) Carl Skau, WFP Deputy Executive Director:
“So I'm in Lebanon in Beirut, which has become the epicenter of the humanitarian fallout of this regional escalation and crisis. There has been a heavy escalation overnight. There are massive displacements. Some 800,000 people have left their homes. It's not the first time. The Lebanese people have been through this crisis before. They've been displaced before, but that doesn't make it any easier. On the contrary, they are exhausted, they are afraid, and frankly, there is a sense of desperation here on the streets. The government is responding, and we are supporting them to deliver with hot meals to the shelters, with cash to the people that have been displaced. And really what we're seeing is Lebanese solidarity in action. Lebanese communities supporting Lebanese communities, Lebanese in our workforce supporting the Lebanese people.”

In coordination with local authorities, WFP is responding to high levels of displacement in Lebanon, and scaling-up lifesaving programmes as needs grow.
WFP reached more than 200,000 people within the first week of the conflict escalation in Lebanon with a mixture of food or cash assistance to meet immediate food security needs. On Thursday (12 Mar), WFP's Deputy Executive Director, Carl Skau, met with some of the families WFP has been supporting where he heard stories of resilience and solidarity from Lebanese families.
Lebanon was already struggling following years of compounding crises: economic collapse, conflict, and over stretched public institutions. This escalation risks pushing families over the edge at a critical moment.
