“Today, we were planning a mission in Kherson. We were going to deliver assistance to an area that has not been served for many months. As usual, we carefully planned the mission. We are very concerned about security, given the context of the conflict, and we notified both the Ukrainian and Russian sides. But unfortunately, immediately after passing the bridge and entering the area, a drone hit one of our cars. Luckily, nobody was hurt. We were still able to reach the place where we were supposed to deliver the assistance. Then, while we were doing that, a second drone struck one of our cars again. We were later evacuated thanks to the support of the local authorities. I do not know who carried out the attack. What I do know is that we were accompanying the local authorities to deliver humanitarian assistance to people in need. Civilians and humanitarian workers should never be targets. These constant attacks on civilians and on humanitarians are simply unacceptable. Member States of the United Nations should respect the rules and the flag of the United Nations.”
3. Various shots, the convoy and local residents receiving support
In Ukraine, while delivering another convoy with supplies to civilians living in Ostriv, one of Kherson’s hardest hit areas, a clearly marked United Nations vehicle was severely damaged by two drone strikes. The mission delivered food and solar lamps to residents of this hard-to-reach area. While the team managed to safely exit the location, this is not an isolated incident.
