“We have a certified laboratory at the public health laboratory level here in Bunia. It's a laboratory that can diagnose Ebola disease. This laboratory has been operational since 17 May [2026]. All that was missing were reagents to begin working and confirming the samples from the cases that we are regularly receiving.”

The World Health Organization (WHO) on Wednesday (27 May) received 4.6 tons of medical equipment and essential supplies at Bunia Airport, in Ituri Province, for the response to the Ebola disease caused by the Bundibugyo virus in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).
These include 2000 medical tests that will help the public health laboratory in Bunia diagnose suspected Ebola cases more quickly and improve the overall response to the outbreak.

Bunia is the capital of Ituri province and the outbreak’s initial site, but cases have spread to 11 health zones in DRC, including North and South Kivu, and to Uganda.
WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus is traveling to the DRC to assess the situation and coordinate containment.
