“Ebola, I think this is not the first time. There were outbreaks in the past, and you managed to stop them. Even the 2018, 2020, when the epicentre was in North Kivu, of course, Ituri was affected to some extent, but you stopped it. So, you can stop this one as well. So, we are hopeful.”

“If you come to the facilities, to health facilities when you have symptoms, you can get the support and recover. So the key is to come forward as early as possible and to get the necessary support. Through that, you can recover. So we can stop this Ebola, and anyone who has it can also recover.”

“But the rule of the game is this thing is everybody's business, and every citizen should be involved. You should believe that this is your issue. Without community ownership, it cannot be effective. The government's leadership, community ownership with partners supporting you, all of us, I think that's how we can stop it. And I'm very, very hopeful. You have done it many times. You can do it now. That's it. It can be done.”

“So because of many factors, the virus was circulating undetected. So, we have number of cases which is much higher than previous outbreaks before even it was detected. So that makes it complex. But not only that, there is displacement, there is conflict in this area, that makes it complex. So I think the response we do should be strong enough to catch up and stop the outbreak.”

An Ebola Treatment Centre was established in Bunia, Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). It will be jointly managed by the Ministry of Health and the World Health Organization (WHO). A team of Ebola care specialists from Kinshasa will arrive on Monday (31 May) to support the existing team.
Constructed by the Centre Évangélique Médical (CEM) to house paediatric services, the building was 99 percent complete and ready for equipment installation before the Ebola outbreak. The outbreak caused severe disruption in the hospital, with multiple staff infected, including two doctors who died, one nurse, and four staff who recovered. Many contacts are still under surveillance.
Because the building was isolated from other hospital structures, it was chosen to serve as an Ebola Treatment Centre (ETC). The ETC will be jointly managed by the Ministry of Health and WHO. At present, the centre has 24 beds for confirmed cases, 18 beds for suspected cases (total 42 beds), with a potential to expand the number of beds in the coming days. A team of Ebola care specialists from Kinshasa will arrive on Monday (31 May) to support the existing team.
