Storyline

Briefing reporters today (2 Jun), a UN spokesperson said Secretary-General António Guterres had strongly condemned Russia's latest large-scale overnight missile and drone attacks on Ukrainian cities, including Kyiv, Dnipro and Kharkiv.

The strikes reportedly killed at least 20 people, including two children, injured more than 100 others and caused widespread damage to homes and other civilian infrastructure, UN spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric said.

"The Secretary-General strongly condemns the latest overnight large-scale missile and drone attacks," the spokesperson told journalists, reiterating that attacks against civilians and civilian infrastructure are prohibited under international humanitarian law.

The UN chief renewed his appeal for an immediate de-escalation of the conflict leading to a full, immediate and unconditional ceasefire.

The UN Humanitarian Coordinator in Ukraine, Matthias Schmale, also condemned the attacks, while humanitarian officials reported that rescue operations were continuing on Monday morning.

Schmale said that instead of enjoying the start of their summer school break, many children and their families spent the night in shelters amid air raid sirens and explosions.

According to the United Nations, humanitarian agencies are providing first aid and psychological support, distributing emergency relief supplies and registering affected residents for cash assistance.
