“Turning to Libya, as I’ve been asked, I can tell you that we are deeply concerned by the violent protests that took place yesterday outside the UNHCR and UNSMIL headquarters in Tripoli. The UN strongly condemns any attack or threat against its personnel or premises. We are concerned by the spread of misinformation and disinformation regarding the work of the United Nations in Libya. We want to clarify that UNHCR works closely with the Libyan authorities to identify and support solutions outside of Libya for people fleeing war and persecution, and in need of international protection, including solutions in third countries, such as resettlement, and voluntary returns, when feasible. The UN appreciates the support of the Libyan authorities in maintaining public order and ensuring the safety of protesters and UN personnel and facilities.”

The United Nations on Friday (5 Jun) condemned attacks and threats against its personnel and facilities in Libya after violent protests erupted outside the headquarters of the UN refugee agency (UNHCR) and the UN Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) in Tripoli.
"We are deeply concerned by the violent protests that took place yesterday outside the UNHCR and UNSMIL headquarters in Tripoli," UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric told reporters in New York.
"The UN strongly condemns any attack or threat against its personnel or premises," he said.
The protests came amid what the United Nations described as growing misinformation and disinformation about its activities in Libya.
Dujarric said the UN refugee agency, UNHCR, works closely with Libyan authorities to identify and support solutions for people fleeing war and persecution who require international protection.
He said those efforts include facilitating solutions outside Libya, including resettlement in third countries and voluntary returns when conditions allow.
The United Nations sought to clarify its role after concerns that inaccurate information had circulated regarding its operations in the country.
Dujarric also thanked Libyan authorities for helping maintain security during the unrest.
"The UN appreciates the support of the Libyan authorities in maintaining public order and ensuring the safety of protesters and UN personnel and facilities," he said.
