“These resolutions must now be fully implemented by all member states as required by the UN Charter. The sanctions imposed by these resolutions are aimed at constraining Iran's capacity to develop and deliver a nuclear weapon and enter restrictions on activities, individuals and entities pertaining to these objectives - including on Iran’s ballistic missile program. The 1737 Committee has also been reestablished. We call for the prompt appointment of a chair to ensure the Committee can effectively oversee implementation of the sanctions and respond to issues of compliance. The panel of experts must also be appointed without further delay.”

The Security Council held today (9 June) an open briefing on the work of the 1737 Sanctions Committee concerning Iran.
Addressing the Council, Russian Ambassador Vassily Nebenzia emphasized “once again of that any attempts to get Committee 1737 back on track are futile. We will not allow the Council to adopt, under the banner of this body, any decisions imposing restrictions on Member States. We will also continue to resist attempts to revive its panel of experts, for which neither the Security Council nor the UN Secretariat has any mandate.”

Early this afternoon, Jérôme Bonnafont, French Representative to the United Nations, addressed the press on behalf of Bahrain, Denmark, Greece, UK, Latvia, US, UAE, France and the EU.
Reading a joint statement, he said, “Iran is the only state without nuclear weapons to enrich uranium up to 60 percent. There is no credible civilian justification for detaining over 400 kilos of uranium enriched at that level.”
He continued, “Iran has also persistently failed to fulfill its safeguard obligations and fully cooperate with the IAEA, which is unable to confirm that Iran's nuclear program is exclusively peaceful.”
He added, “These resolutions must now be fully implemented by all member states as required by the UN Charter.
