“We have just launched the Global Alliance for Human Rights here in Geneva, and with many thousands of people watching us and following online and what I can tell you, there was an energy in the room, there was a momentum. I've rarely felt such a momentum. We heard from the mayor of Geneva. We heard from very young students who wanted to make sure that children and young people are part of it. We heard from human rights defenders. We heard from civil society organizations, from Member States at the ambassadorial level mostly. We heard from artists and those who organized film festivals. We heard from the private sector, and we heard, importantly, from an umbrella organization that organizes, human rights for cities. And there is so much more to be done. This is really a kick-off event. We know that as we prepare for the 80th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 2028, that we will need a groundswell of support, a movement that puts human rights at the centre of everything that informs us and that that is part of our lives.”

5. SOUNDBITE (English) Awa Dabo, Deputy High Commissioner for Human Rights, United Nations: “Right now is the time to launch a Global Alliance for Human Rights because I think the world needs it. I think there's a hunger. There's a need for the world to show solidarity, for the world to show that human rights has to be at the centre of everything that we do. I think a lot is happening geo-politically. A lot is happening globally. There's a lot of anxiety and concern, I think. On the one hand, while the world has come very far in human rights, we have seen, worryingly what seems to be a rollback of some of these values and traditions and norms that we were raised on, that we believe in, so I think, better now than never.”

“It's the moment because actually everybody feels like they need to mobilize when rights are declining and there's such a backlash around the world. This is the moment to pull people together because we're convinced and polling suggests that actually the backlash doesn't represent the majority. The vast majority of the global public wants human rights, believes in human rights, and would join a coalition and an alliance for human rights if they knew that it was possible.”

“How can we make Human Rights not just universal, but also relatable? How does it affect me and why are they mine? I think we really need and I like the approach to the alliance, that it starts very locally and that it is going to mobilize many local organizations. And so, people really understand what human rights are for them, how it affects their communities, their families, and how they themselves can contribute and that they have ownership.”

At the launch of the Global Alliance for Human Rights in Geneva, Human Rights Chief Volker Türk today (11 Jun) said that ahead of the 80th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 2028, “we will need a groundswell of support, a movement that puts human rights at the centre of everything that informs us and that that is part of our lives.”
Propelled by the UN Human Rights Office, the Global Alliance aims to mobilize actors from all sectors, regions, and generations, to help place human rights at the centre of global debate and decision-making.
Deputy UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Awa Dabo, said, “right now is the time to launch a Global Alliance for Human Rights because I think the world needs it. I think there's a hunger. There's a need for the world to show solidarity, for the world to show that human rights has to be at the centre of everything that we do.”
The Alliance is a commitment to move together, in view of the 80th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, towards a future where governments are accountable, societies are inclusive, and economies are fair; where innovation puts people first, and respect shapes the relationships of people with each other and with the planet.
For her part, the Under-Secretary-General at the Department of Global Communications, Melissa Fleming, said, “the vast majority of the global public wants human rights, believes in human rights, and would join a coalition and an alliance for human rights if they knew that it was possible.”

Convened by the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), the Global Alliance for Human Rights is a multi-stakeholder, cross-regional mobilization that will connect people across sectors and generations.
Anchored in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and building towards its 80th anniversary in 2028, the Alliance seeks to inspire hope, strengthen collaboration and generate collective action for human rights. Together, we can imagine how to carry human rights into the next 80-year chapter of our common humanity.
