“So, what I can say to the community here is that coming late is what it is here. Because I am the first, as you say, I am a champion today, yes I am, but how many lost their lives beside me there, they came late, and some were even brought in a coma, they were already at their end. So this is the reason why I want to say that. And also perhaps one thing is that, here in Mongbwalu, there is ignorance too, because the epidemic never took off in Mongbwalu only. We started talking about coffins, we have lost quite a number of people here, but until today, the epidemic spread everywhere. And since I will be the first witness, I will use my story to educate others about the disease.”

“So everybody should know that Ebola is already here. You are afraid, people are afraid, when someone dies here we start to leave here. We all see how many cases of deaths there are in many families here. But instead of going to get the bodies from there, from the house, bring them here, we shouldn’t continue sending the Red Cross to go and get people from houses there.”

“We came here to Mongbwalu to participate in the official discharge ceremony for one of the first Ebola survivors here in Mongbwalu. He is a champion for us, having come from very far away, and he has just delivered a powerful message. We came to support the Ministry of Health and all the other partners to celebrate this champion who has just been discharged.”

In the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), the Ebola outbreak continues to expand, both in terms of case numbers and geographic spread. As reported by Ministry of Health, as of 10 June, there have been 676 confirmed cases reported and 136 deaths. The vast majority of these cases are in Ituri province. Almost every day, cases are being identified in new health zones; this reflects both the scale epidemic which is most likely bigger than what is being detected, and the high mobility of the population in this region. So far 262 patients are being treated in health facilities and 32 patients have recovered, but there is a need for more beds to cover the increasing needs.
