The United Nations Mission in South Sudan’s (UNMISS’s) new Chief hosted her very first Joint Verification and Monitoring Mechanism (JVMM) meeting in Juba today (3 Jun).
The JVMM is the and is a part of the Ministry of Defence of the Government of South Sudan. This body was formed so that the South Sudan Peoples Defence Forces (SSPDF) and UNMISS could interact and facilitate the free movement of the UN and the deployment of UNMISS peacekeepers where necessary.
These meetings are held on a regular basis so that UNMISS and South Sudanese authorities can bilaterally manage security issues in conflict zones, facilitate force protection teams, coordinate humanitarian clearances and access for the delivery of lifesaving aid and to build trust amongst each other.
The meeting was attended by division commanders from the SSPDF and UNMISS and the main point of discussion in today’s meeting was the un peacekeeping mission’s renewed mandate.

Challenges such as access denials at illegal checkpoints in areas affected by intercommunal violence were discussed and solutions found.

For his part, lt. General Abud Thiongkhol addressed the issue of illegal checkpoints and taxation.

As UNMISS recalibrates to be more responsive to the evolving needs of the communities it serves, unfettered movement for peacekeepers is key.
The JVMM is the mechanism by which this can happen.
