WFP and UNHCR are warning that more than 650,000 already vulnerable refugees and asylum seekers in South Sudan risk losing access to assistance due to funding shortfalls. This includes 240,000 refugees who will be cut from food and nutrition assistance within weeks, severing a lifeline for hundreds of thousands of people already living on the edge.

Many children arrive in South Sudan already dangerously undernourished, making nutrition support essential from the moment they arrive. If this assistance is cut, more children could become malnourished, while women and children will face greater risks of exploitation and abuse.

Together with our partners UNHCR, and others, WFP is supporting refugees and the communities hosting them. But needs are rising faster than resources.”

The cash assistance she receives from WFP enables her buy food for her family and build her small business, but now her only lifeline is at risk of being taken away.
The communities hosting refugees in South Sudan are already severely food insecure. More than 7.8 million people across the country – more than half the population - are acutely food insecure, and 2.2 million children are acutely malnourished.
Resources for all operations are stretched, and WFP has already been forced to prioritize assistance for only the most vulnerable families, who are receiving just 50 percent of the full food ration.
WFP faces an immediate USD 37 million funding gap for its refugee response and an overall funding shortfall of USD 258 million for the remainder of 2026.
