Storyline

UNMISS today (28 Aug) paid tribute to two Ethiopian peacekeepers who tragically lost their lives during an ambush on an UNMISS patrol in South Sudan’s Jonglei state on 24 August.

At a simple but poignant ceremony, Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General and Head of UNMISS, Anita Kiki Gbeho, honoured their courage, dedication and commitment to protecting civilians.

“Their courage, dedication and commitment to protecting civilians embody the highest ideals of United Nations Peacekeeping. As we lay this wreath today, we honour their service and the lives they touched. Their sacrifice will never be forgotten.”

Their loss is deeply felt across the UNMISS family and beyond.

The Mission has called for an immediate and thorough investigation into the attack,
so that those responsible can be brought to justice. SRSG Gbeho also conveyed her condolences on the passing of another Ethiopian colleague following an illness.
