“The whole village seems to have been washed away. There are families that have been washed away. The health facilities have been washed away, and people are in dire need of support. WHO has been trying to assess the needs and respond to the government of Nepal with whatever best we can at this moment. We have been supporting with IEHK kits (Interagency Emergency Health Kit with emergency health supplies). We’ve been supporting with tents, we’re supporting with other supplies as required and there are other supplies that are coming from Kathmandu to this place.”

“I’m currently at the Humanitarian Staging Area in Kathmandu, where we are preparing to hand over essential medicines, supplies, including masks, gloves, hand sanitizer, and body bags to the Government of Nepal. These items are being handed over based on the urgent needs identified during the WHO field assessment and as per the request from the health workers and health officials from the flood affected areas. WHO remains ready to provide additional support as and when required by the Government of Nepal.”

The World Health Organization (WHO) is working closely with the Government of Nepal and partners to identify urgent health needs, support the health response and maintain access to essential health services following the severe flash floods that affected parts of central Nepal on 26 August.
The floods affected communities along the Bhote Koshi and Trishuli river corridors. Rasuwa, Nuwakot, Dhading and Chitwan districts in Bagmati Province, and Gorkha and Tanahun districts in Gandaki Province, have been affected. The Government of Nepal has declared 15 municipalities in the affected districts as disaster crisis-affected areas for three months.

As an immediate response, WHO has mobilized US$ 150,000 through its South- East Asia Regional Health Emergency Fund (SEARHEF).
WHO has mobilized emergency medical supplies, including an Interagency Emergency Health Kit to support the health needs of nearly 10 000 people for three months, multipurpose tents and body bags. WHO is also supporting coordination through the Health Cluster and providing technical support to strengthen post-disaster surveillance and response planning.

WHO’s immediate priorities are to support care for injured people, strengthen disease surveillance, address emerging public health risks, and support continuity and restoration of essential health services. WHO will continue to support assessments, coordination, rehabilitation of health services and recovery efforts, in line with needs identified by national authorities.
