Secretary-General António Guterres, who is in Kyrgyzstan for the Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit, taking place in the nation’s capital, Bishkek, held a series of bilateral meetings, including with Kyrgyz President Sadyr Japarov, as well as Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev and the President of Tajikistan, Emomali Rahmon. He also attended World Nomad Games opening ceremony.
The summit opened on Monday on a high note – coinciding with the country’s Independence Day – featuring initial bilateral and multilateral meetings ahead of Tuesday’s main heads-of-state session.
The Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) is the world's largest regional organization by territory and population (3.5 billion people). It was founded in 2001 by the leaders of China, Russia, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, and Uzbekistan, later expanding to include India, Pakistan, Iran, and Belarus.
Guterres, who is set to address the main meeting tomorrow, noted that Kyrgyzstan has been elected to the UN Security Council for the first time, for the 2027–2028 term. This places the country at the centre of international efforts to promote peace, security, and development.
Kyrgyzstan is the second Central Asian nation to be elected to the Security Council as a non-permanent member, following Kazakhstan, which became the first state from the region to serve on the Council in 2017–2018.
Guterres and Japarov discussed cooperation between the UN and Kyrgyzstan – particularly in climate change, environmental protection, and socio-economic development – as well as peace and security issues ahead of Kyrgyzstan’s upcoming Security Council tenure.
During his meeting with Mirziyoyev, the Secretary-General praised Uzbekistan’s diplomatic initiatives aimed at fostering peace and stability across Central Asia.
During his meeting with Rahmon, he thanked Tajikistan for its continued engagement on the global water and glaciers agenda. Guterres and Rahmon also discussed regional developments, including the situation in neighbouring Afghanistan, which shares a border with Tajikistan.
This week, Kyrgyzstan hosts over 100 countries at the World Nomad Games, showcasing their traditional sports, crafts, and music.
The Games are the largest international competition for ethnic sports, featuring events such as horse races, mounted competitions, wrestling, and archery.
In 2021, the World Nomad Games were officially inscribed on UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
