“The Member States of the Consensus underline that the military presence of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland in the Malvinas, South Georgias and South Sandwich Islands and the surrounding maritime areas is contrary to the region's policy of adherence to a peaceful solution to the sovereignty dispute and reiterate their call to resume negotiations towards a definitive solution and to put an end to British unilateral activities in the disputed area that violate UN General Assembly resolutions”

Addressing the Special Committee on Decolonization today (02 Oct), Argentinian Representative Francisco Tropepi stated, “By history and by right, the Malvinas are Argentine.”

Tropepi said that the United Kingdom "maintains a disproportionate military presence in the South Atlantic, with approximately 1,200 personnel stationed" on the Falklands (Malvinas) Islands.

He continued, "This force is equivalent to nearly 40 percent of the territory’s population. This figure illustrates the scale of a militarization that is difficult to reconcile with the United Nations repeated calls for dialogue and a peaceful resolution to this dispute.”

He also said, “The announcements made in December 2025 regarding the intention to commence hydrocarbon exploration and exploitation activities in areas under dispute constitute a unilateral act with potentially irreversible effects, given that these are non-renewable natural resources.”

He added, “In view of the seriousness of this situation, Argentina is deploying all the tools at the State’s disposal—diplomatic, economic, judicial, and legal—to deter and sanction state and non-state actors that violate our sovereignty.”

He reported, “This week, on September 28, the Argentine Government initiated arbitration proceedings under Annex VII of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea against the United Kingdom, with the aim of preventing the unlawful exploitation of hydrocarbon resources on Argentina’s continental shelf around the Malvinas Islands.”

He concluded, “The Malvinas Question is deeply rooted in Argentina’s history. It transcends generations and political differences and constitutes a truly national cause. By history and by right, the Malvinas are Argentine.”
