Each year, more than half a million women die in pregnancy or childbirth, and more than 10 million children die before their fifth birthday. In order to meet MDGs 4 & 5, increased funding, better health and information systems, a stronger health workforce, improved coordination and, most importantly, immediate action is needed.
The New Partnership for Maternal, Newborn & Child Health and The Global Alliance for Vaccines & Immunization is a group of major organizations focused on the well-being of women and children, with aims to increase funding, to improve coordination, and to create better health and information systems.
On Monday, (12 September) a new partnership to protect the health of women and children will be launched in New York at UNICEF House. Among the panelists: Dr. Alpha Oumar Konaré, Chairperson, Commission of the African Union;Mrs. Mary Robinson, President, Realizing Rights: The Ethical Globalization Initiative (former President of Ireland and former UN High Commissioner for Human Rights), and other global health leaders.
