Parliamentarians from around the world gathered in Ethiopia this week to discuss the role of lawmakers in supporting development efforts during a global economic downturn.
They visited UNICEF supported grassroots projects in the capital Addis Ababa and met with representatives of local NGOs.
Here in Abebech Gobena women and girls benefit from micro-loan financing to open small businesses and fund their children’s education even during hard times.
In another community, the delegates visited a health extension program set up to train female health workers in life-saving interventions.
SOUNDBITE (English) Siyadah Ethamy Gris, Parliament of Egypt:
“This project touched me very much because for me the field and what we’re seeing is the challenge of Ethiopia and countries like Egypt are also facing vis a vis adolescent girls and what we need to do to empower them because they are the mothers of the future.”
Pervasive poverty threatens the health of most Ethiopian children and women. Three quarters of all causes of morbidity can be linked to communicable diseases and malnutrition affecting mothers and children primarily.
Just as critical to the health of women is education.
This primary school promotes gender equality and encourages students to participate in after school clubs where issues like HIV, ethics, and child rights are discussed.
SOUNDBITE (English) Nur Serter, Grand National Assembly, Turkey:
“I’m deeply impressed. I believe that in a very short time a great improvement has taken place in Ethiopia.”
Complementing these field trips, UNICEF and the International Parliamentary Union organized a panel discussion on ways to invest in a better future for adolescent girls in Ethiopia and beyond.
