Storyline

Assistant Secretary-General for Peacekeeping Operations Edmund Mulet said there is an escalation in tensions in both sides of the border between Chad and Sudan .

Briefing members of the Security Council today on the latest report by the Secretary-General on Chad and the Central African Republic , he warned members that in the absence of a political reconciliation, particularly in Darfur , the humanitarian situation was “particularly difficult”.

Citing the report, Mulet said that two hundred and fifty thousand Sudanese refugees, one hundred and sixty internally displaced, and seven hundred thousand Chadians were dependent on humanitarian assistance.

Mulet also reiterated that achieving the voluntary return and resettlement of IDP’s, demilitarization of refugees and IDP camps and the improvement in security with would require “broad efforts involving actors.”

Czech Ambassador Martin Palous, on behalf of the European Union said that although the European Union Forces (EUFOR) mandate had formally ended, the EU would remain an active player in the region.
