“The challenge we face is how to address climate change in a time when many of our priorities are focused on our jobs, on our livelihoods, and we are going to cope with the economic depression that is now facing the world. UNEP has for some months now, together with some of worlds leading economists and organizations, been calling for a ‘Global Green New Deal’ in trying to help reach an agreement in Copenhagen we must focus on the linkages between the environment and the economy. We have the technologies, we have the knowledge and we have the financial means which we could join in a global and unprecedented partnership to address both climate change and the financial crisis. The Global Greener Deal is an appeal that with all the economic stimulus packages in the world today we try and invest some of those resources not only in stabilizing today’s economy but also to invest in tomorrow’s economic opportunities.”

Storyline

Cozumel, Mexico will be the main venue for this year’s global observance of World Environment Day (5 June), which is dedicated to climate change as part of the Secretary-General’s campaign to “seal a deal” on a follow-on agreement to the Kyoto Protocol by the end of the year.

In a video message to commemorate the Day, the Executive Director of The United Nations Environmental program (UNEP) Achim Steiner said that the challenge the world faces today is how to address climate change in a time when priorities are focused on maintaining jobs, livelihoods, and coping with the “economic depression that is now facing the world”.

Steiner said that UNEP had for some months, together with leading economists and organizations, been calling for a “Global Green New Deal” to focus on the linkages between the environment and the economy when international negotiations on a climate change treaty culminate at a summit in Copenhagen in December 2009.

He said that with all the economic stimulus packages in the world today we should “try and invest some of those resources not only in stabilizing today’s economy but also to invest in tomorrow’s economic opportunities.”

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has been calling on world leaders to “seal a deal” on an international framework to replace the Kyoto protocol after it expires in 2012 that would cut greenhouse gas emissions, promote green development, and help the world’s most vulnerable adapt to a changing climate.
