Storyline

The Federation Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) fined the Ivorian Football Federation $47,000 today following the conclusions of the inquiry into the soccer World Cup qualifying match between Côte d'Ivoire and Malawi that killed 22 and injured over 100 people last March.
FIFA has imposed a new set of safety measures for the next round of the 2010 World Cup qualifiers in September – this time only 20,000 people will be allowed in the stadium.

The organization also gave a $96,000 donation to a fund set up for families of the victims.

The stampede took place before the match began when people were trying to squeeze into the stadium and panicked.

There have been other tragedies at international matches in Africa, one occurring nine years ago in Zimbabwe where 13 people were killed.
