6. SOUNDBITE (English) Ban Ki-moon, UN Secretary-General:
“The Government must create conditions that give all stakeholders the opportunity to participate freely in elections. This includes the release of all political prisoners- including Daw Aung San Suu Kyi- and respect fundamental freedoms. I have expressed my concerns that the published electoral laws and the overall electoral environment so far do not fully measure up to what is needed for an inclusive political process.”

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon briefed reporters following his meeting with the Group of Friends on Myanmar ahead of that country’s first planned elections in twenty years.
The Secretary-General stressed the need for the elections to be “inclusive, participatory, and transparent” while calling on the Myanmar government to release “all political prisoners” including Nobel Peace Prize laureate Daw Aung San Suu Kyi.
Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, leader of the Myanmar political party, the National League for Democracy, has been held under house arrest for more than a decade by the Myanmar military junta.
Ban urged the Myanmar government to create conditions that “give all stakeholders the opportunity to participate freely in elections” but also voiced concerns that the “overall electoral environment” did not yet “measure up to what is needed for an inclusive political process.”
He also warned that without the full participation of “all the people including political prisoners,” the elections would not be seen as “credible.”
Myanmar’s elections are scheduled for later this year.
