The Commission of Inquiry investigating the assassination of former Pakistani Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto concluded its work today (15 April) after handing over its findings in a report to the United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon.
Ambassador Heraldo Muñoz of Chile, the Chair of the Commission, and one of the other Commission members, Marzuki Darusman of Indonesia, met with Ban earlier today (15 April) to handover the report and brief him on the findings.
In a statement after receiving the report, Ban commended on the work of the Commission and added that UN will continue its assistance to and cooperation with the Government and people of Pakistan.
After meeting with the Commission, Ban transmitted the report to the Government of Pakistan through the Pakistani Ambassador Abdullah Hussain Haroon. Ban is expected to share the report with Security Council members.
The Commission was established at the request of the Pakistani Government in July 2009 more than a year following Bhutto’s assassination on 27 December 2007.
Bhutto, Pakistan’s first and only female Prime Minister to date, led the country from 1988 to 1990 and 1993 to 1996. She attended several UN conferences including General Assembly sessions in 1995 and 1996 when she met with the organization’s former Secretary-General Boutros Boutros-Ghali.
During a session, she spoke about the importance of using policies of “moderation, accommodation and toleration” against “violence and terror.”
Bhutto was assassinated as she was leaving a campaign rally for Pakistan’s People’s Party ahead of the national elections in 2008.
