Storyline

Actress Angelina Jolie visited UNHCR field operations and the isolated community of Barranca Bermeja, located in thick jungle on the banks of the San Miguel River, which marks the border with Colombia.

SOUND-UP (English) Xavier Creach, UNHCR:
“You are now reaching the border, the river itself, which is the San Miguel River. And on the other side is Colombia. What you can see is Colombia, so you can see they are very close to the border.”

The little village hosts 34 families, most of them refugees from the violence that has plagued parts of Colombia for decades. Angelina visited the house of a leader who was shot last September.

SOUND-UP (English) Xavier Creach, UNHCR:
“The shooter was hidden over there and you can see all the bullet impact.”

There are around 51,000 registered Colombian refugees in Ecuador, but UNHCR estimates that about 135,000 people are in need of international protection.

SOUND-UP (English) UNHCR Staff, Translating:
“When they arrived at first they didn't have anything because they had to leave Colombia in a hurry, the only clothes they brought were the clothes they were wearing at the time. In the year 2000 his daughter’s husband was murder and this is when all the problems started. Later they have received the information that paramilitaries were going to kill all his family.”

In Lago Agrío, capital of Sucumbíos province, Angelina had a reunion with a Colombian mother she last met here in 2002. The woman recently was recently treated for cancer, but was hopeful of a full recovery.

Ecuador is the country with the largest refugee population in Latin America. Many of the Colombians live in remote settlements in the north, like Barranca Bermeja, are often too scared to seek help from UNHCR and its partners.
