“We cannot balance budgets on the backs of the world’s poorest people. We cannot abandon our commitment to the most vulnerable. That is the message I delivered in Toronto, loud and clear. As the G20 Summit Declaration stated, we must keep a strong focus on the longer term. And I quote: ‘Narrowing the development gap and reducing poverty are integral to our broader objective of achieving strong, sustainable and balanced growth.’”

And it is, at this time, important that these proximity talks continue, and we really do not even think about any scenario of this situation in the Middle East rushing into a more violent or dangerous situation as you suggest - this is not our scenario.”

“The door is still open for a negotiated settlement. And I discussed this again with the Presidency of the European Union and the European Council, encouraging them to continue these negotiations in the format of the E3 plus 3, and I will continue to urge the leaders of the world, the concerned parties to continue their negotiations for an eventual resolution of this issue.”

Following his recent trip to Canada to attend the G20 meeting in that country, United Nations (UN) Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, briefed journalists today (28 June) in at the UN headquarters in New York.
As leaders of the G20 agreed over the weekend to take different paths for cutting budget deficits and making their banking systems safer, Ban told journalists that his message in Toronto was “loud and clear,” that budgets should not be balanced “on the backs of the world’s poorest people,” and insisted that the commitment to the most vulnerable people in the globe could not be abandoned.
Ban talked about his upcoming visit to the Democratic Republic of Congo, where he will take part in events to mark the fiftieth anniversary of independence of the country. He will also visit Gabon where he plans to address the parliament, and highlight the efforts that Gabon was taking to achieving the MDGs.
Ban emphasized that his visits to Africa had reinforced his conviction that Africa “can indeed meet the MDGs, with the right investment in tools to create jobs and generate incomes.”
On Kyrgyzstan’s referendum on a new constitution, Ban said that it was an important step towards promoting the rule of law and establishing a legitimate, democratically elected government.
He said that the UN would “continue to support Kyrgyzstan and its people as they prepare for parliamentary elections later this year.” He recognized that the situation remained fragile and that “we will continue to monitor developments closely, together with the key concerned parties in the region and in the world.”
Responding to whether he brought up the Middle East issue with the leaders at the G20 meeting, Ban said that the situation in the Middle East was always a key concern of the international community. He added that he informed the leaders that his proposal for the investigation on the flotilla raid was “still on the table”, adding that “at this time, important that these proximity talks continue.”
In response to Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad announcement earlier today that Teheran would delay nuclear talks until August, Ban said that “the door is still open for a negotiated settlement.” He added that he had discussed the issue with the Presidency of the European Union and the European Council, encouraging them to continue the negotiations in the format of the E3 plus 3 (United Kingdom, France, Germany, United States, China and Russia).
