“We have so many amputees in this country. The ones we have chosen for this particular team, they have policies that they will not go to the streets to beg.”

“When I woke up this morning I did two haircuts. So now I have 1.2USD.”

SOUNDBITE (English) Maxwell Fuona, Amputee Football Player:
“It was the rebel war in Sierra Leone that made me lose my leg. It was January 6th when the rebels attacked my village. As soon as they saw me they shot my leg. I fell down nearby a gutter area. I was not dead but my leg was cut off. With one leg I never thought I would play football again. I was thinking my life is off, I can’t play football again. When I had both legs I was going to school so when I was amputated, I thought I would never do anything again.”
SOUNDBITE (English) Alhaji Gaba, Football Coach:
“We have so many amputees in this country. The ones we have chosen for this particular team, they have policies that they will not go to the streets to beg.”
SOUNDBITE (English) Maxwell Fuona, Amputee Football Player:
“We the handicapped have been discriminated. When we go to the streets with these crutches, we are not respected in Sierra Leone. But as far as we are playing football, they know that all is not lost. We are capable of doing what they are doing. I make a living from being a barber. When I woke up this morning I did two haircuts. So now I have 1.2USD. If I have 15 to 30 USD, I’ll think of my mother in the province.”
