Storyline

In the Cross River state of Nigeria, Africa’s most populous country, the challenges that disadvantaged and excluded communities face are many.

Open Defecation Free (ODF) communities are what Esther and her companions at Women Empowerment and Rights Initiative (WERI) want to achieve.

It is part of an effort supported by the European Union (EU), UNICEF and the Nigerian government to bring safe water and sanitation to poor communities.

The goal is to have people commit to dig and maintain their own latrines.

Part of the success is to get families to use toilets, but also to protect water sources from contamination.
