Storyline

The International Federation for Human Rights (FIDH) held a press conference today (9 November) at UN Headquarters, with the participation of Iranian lawyer Shirin Ebadi, winner of the 2003 Nobel Peace Prize, discussed the human rights situation in her country.

Ebadi said that political imprisonments have increased in Iran and the human rights situation has continued to deteriorate.

Nevertheless, she said that she does not support “a military attack on Iran or even economic sanctions” as this would worsen the human rights situation.

The Nobel Prize winner said that “instead of economic sanctions we support political sanctions,” including having human rights violators’ “visas to enter other countries revoked” as well as freezing their “assets in other countries.”

Ebadi acknowledged that Iran will likely be elected to Executive Board of the newly created UN Women agency and said that it will be a “mockery for the Board, from the beginning of its work.”

She said that according to Iranian law “the life of a woman is worth half of the life of a man.”

In September, Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, responding to questions about Iran’s human rights record as well as protest in Iran and abroad, said that he believed in the “freedom for everyone to express their views” but that “most people in the world” supported the Governments ideas.

FIDH was founded in 1922 and is considered to be the first international human rights organisation. Its motto is “Peace for human rights.”
