Storyline

In Haiti, cholera has become the main threat as it reaches more and more regions.

According to United Nations (UN) Office for Humanitarian Coordination (OCHA), 796 people died of the disease while a total of 12,303 patients were being treated in hospitals and Cholera Treatment Centers.

In the Artibonite region, the damage caused by Hurricane Tomas was still to be seen.

Rice and banana fields remained flooded and the extent of damage on crops and livestock was still to be evaluated.

The region is the second most populated of the country made up of mostly farmers who feel abandoned.

SOUNDBITE (Creole) Joanene Compere, farmers union, Gonaives:
“All the canals are made of earth. The ministry of Agriculture should do something about it. There are not safe. As soon it rains, they collapse.”

The latest floods have also made the cholera in this region even worse. New cases of deaths are being reported from Gonaives every day, but the worst is yet to come, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).

Today, farmers remain worried about working in the fields because they fear they could be contaminated.

SOUNDBITE (FRENCH) Leo Kortkaas:
“At FAO (Food and Agricultural Organization) together with the Ministry of Agriculture, we are trying everything to sensitize the rural world and convince farmers that there is no danger for them to work in the fields”

Meanwhile UN agencies and their partners today (12 November) appealed for $164 million to support Haiti’s efforts to fight the deadly cholera outbreak that has already claimed several hundred lives in the small Caribbean nation.

The funds sought for the Cholera Inter-Sector Response Strategy for Haiti will go towards getting additional doctors, medicines and water purification equipment to respond to the epidemic, which has spread quickly since it was first confirmed on 22 October.
