“The reports from Bahrain overnight are deeply troubling. Here as elsewhere, violence should not be used against peaceful demonstrators and against journalists. It must stop. Those responsible must be brought to justice.”

“First of all I am disturbed by all this violent means of trying to disperse the demonstrators. The freedom of expression, freedom of access to information, particularly the journalists, their movement, their activity should by fully guaranteed. There should be no violence and human rights should be protected. That’s the basic in addressing this issue. For all the bold measures which I am calling for to take place should be left to the leaders so that they can engage in broad based consultation.”

Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said that he would be “reaching out again” in the days ahead to leaders in North Africa and the Middle East to reiterate his message that the situation unfolding in the region calls for bold reforms, not repression.
Speaking to journalists today at headquarters in New York, he said that the latest reports from Bahrain were “deeply troubling,” adding that violence should not be used against peaceful demonstrators or against journalists.
Ban also welcomed the public commitments made to holding of free and transparent elections as part of the transition to a democratic, civilian rule. “Those commitments must be fulfilled,” he said, there must be no turning back.”
When asked what specific recommendations he would have regarding the protests in Bahrain, he said that he was “disturbed” by the violent means used to disperse the demonstrators, adding that freedom of expression and freedom of access to information should by fully guaranteed.
Meanwhile, a group of UN experts warned today that the transition process in Egypt should not distract from punishing human rights violations that occurred during the protests, noting that up to 365 people, including 32 police officers, were killed and some 5,500 injured, 1,000 of them police.
