The world has 1.2 billion adolescents aged 10-19 and the vast majority of them live in developing countries. They face a unique set of challenges ranging from climate change and rising unemployment to rapid urbanization. UNICEF has dedicated its annual flagship publication 'State of the World's Children' to youth. The report, to be launched tomorrow in New York, emphasizes that investing in adolescents can break entrenched cycles of poverty and inequity. UNICEF

Storyline

Haiti’s generation next, inspiring others to rebuild their country through music.

A year after the earthquake devastated the country, this hip hop band is urging young people to brave the odds, step up and create positive change

Nearly half of the Haitian population is under 18, but the lack of opportunities has cast a dark cloud over the future of country

From Haiti to Pakistan, millions of adolescents face an increasingly uncertain world. A world where political turmoil, the economic recession, rising unemployment, escalating humanitarian crises and climate change are presenting unprecedented challenges

SOUNDBITE (Sindhi) Sajjad Shoro, 17 year old:
“I had big dreams. I wanted to get an education. I wanted to get a job. I wanted to see the
children in my village educated; I wanted to see the village prosper. But the floods came and
drowned all our dreams.”

Today, more than a billion adolescents between 10 and 19 years old stand at the crossroads between childhood and the adult world.

The majority live in the developing world where the inequities are glaring and the poorest and most marginalized children are most vulnerable to abuse and exploitation.

But over the years, international efforts have focused on early childhood and the resources devoted to adolescents have been extremely limited.

17 year old Farzana, a mother of two children in Pakistan's Punjab province was one of them

“It hurts me. It hurts me a lot as I wanted to study and make a life for myself. People don’t realize that an educated mother can raise her children better.”

Recognizing the need to turn adolescence into an age of opportunity, UNICEF has placed the youth at the centre of its flagship report ‘State of the World’s Children’.

The report highlights the need to invest in adolescents, to help them navigate this pivotal time and set them on a path where their potential can be realized.

Evidence shows that educating and empowering the youth is our best hope of breaking the unending cycles of poverty and inequity.

Through its report, UNICEF is urging all stakeholders to support young people develop the skills and abilities they need to pull themselves out of poverty. It highlights the need to make use of the energy and initiative that adolescents have to offer by involving them in the decision-making process.
