“The two leaders have come together at the United Nations in an effort to resolve the long-standing border dispute between the two countries. I am pleased to report that the two leaders have reiterated their commitment to submit the dispute to the International Court of Justice and to make every effort to conclude the mediation as soon as possible. I want to underscore that they will have the full support of the United Nations as they work together to find a solution. This is an important demonstration of statesmanship on both sides.”

United Nations (UN) Secretary-General Ban Ki- moon met today (25 February) with Gabonese President Ali Bongo Ondimba and his Equatorial Guinean counterpart Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo to hold a discussion on the ongoing UN-led mediation on the border dispute between the two countries.
The High-Level Meeting constitutes a significant step towards the goal of bringing the issue to the International Court of Justice (ICJ) as well as towards improving the overall relations between the two countries.
It was the first time that the two presidents meet specifically on this issue.
At a Security Council meeting later in the afternoon, the Secretary-General praised the two leaders and said that “they will have the full support of the United Nations as they work together to find a solution” to this issue.
The two countries have long been at odds over the sovereignty of the potentially oil rich Mbanie island, a small rocky outcrop north of the Gabonese Capital Libreville.
