Storyline

Syrian Ambassador to the United Nations (UN) said the “exaggerated descriptions” of the recent attacks against foreign embassies in Damascus “is part of the well known campaign” the United States and France “are conducting against Syria, both within the Security Council and outside it.”

Addressing the press today (12 July) at the UN headquarters, Ambassador Bashar Ja'afari said his government “deeply regards” that the two countries “have distorted and exaggerated the facts regarding yesterday’s demonstrations which were organized by some youth to express their views with regard to the interference into Syria’s internal affairs by the embassies of the above mentioned countries.”

The attacks resulted in damage to embassy premises and injuries to diplomatic personnel. According to the UN, the security of diplomatic missions is the responsibility of the host countries.

Earlier today, German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle said his country plans to work with other European partners on a resolution “in the Security Council against the Syrian regime.”

He added that “it’s absolutely decisive that every government in every country as the clear duty to protect diplomatic and foreign missions on their own land.”

On yesterday’s Middle East Quartet meeting in Washington DC, Westerwelle said his government “is convinced that we want to achieve a two-State solution by negotiation” adding that “unilateral steps could be counter-productive.”

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon also talked about the meeting saying that all parties “need to make all efforts to find a way forward to re-start negotiations to finally bring an end to the occupation and an end to the conflict, and lead to the establishment of two states, an independent Palestine and a secure Israel.”

Then Palestinians are expected to go to the UN in September to seek a vote on their statehood.
