Storyline

In an exclusive interview with UNifeed on the eve of South Sudan’s admission into the United Nations (UN), Vice President Riek Machar said both his country and northern Sudan “should use this euphoria to resolve the conflicts” in Abyei, Southern Kordofan, the Blue Nile States and Darfur.

Speaking after his meeting with the UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon yesterday (13 July), Salva Kiir said that in an effort to move forward, his government is looking into enhancing the country’s resources by injecting capital into it.

“We can make South Sudan an economic top of Africa, a financial centre for Africa,” he added.

South Sudan declared independence from the rest of Sudan on 9 July as a result of the January 2011 referendum held under the terms of the 2005 Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) that ended the decades-long civil war between the North and the South.

Residents of the disputed region of Abyei were also meant to vote in a separate referendum in January, to decide on whether to be a part of the north or the south, but difference over eligibility saw the referendum postponed, causing tensions and deadly clashes.

Last month both leaders of the north and south agreed under the umbrella of the African Union High Level Panel to demilitarize the region, following clashes that saw the northern army take full control of the disputed area in May.

Meanwhile, efforts are also under way to expedite the complete deployment of the UN Interim Security Force for Abyei (UNISFA), with plans for initial deployment of 1,643 soldiers before 20 July.

Machar said that the deployment of the Ethiopian troops “will bring about security” and “we will find a solution to Abyei.”

Earlier today (14 July) the General Assembly voted to admit South Sudan as the 193rd member of the UN, welcoming the newly independent country to the community of nations. Following the vote, Machar together with UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and General Assembly President Joseph Deiss witnessed the raising of the new country’s flag at UN headquarters.
