Storyline

United Nations (UN) Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon today (3 Aug) expressed support for a Security Council presidential statement condemning the widespread violation of human rights in Syrian and the use of force against civilians by the country’s security forces.

Ban said that “the world has watched the deteriorating situation in Syria with the most profound concern, but the events of the past few days have been brutally shocking.”

He reiterated his call to President Bashar al-Assad and the Syrian authorities “to immediately cease all violence against their people, to fully respect human rights, and implement reforms they have already announced.”

The Secretary-General stressed that “all killings should be investigated fully, independently and transparently” and “those responsible should be held to account” while “the legitimate aspirations of the Syrian people must be addressed through an inclusive Syrian-led political process that guarantees fundamental freedoms and rights for all.”

Syria has been rocked by deadly civil unrest since mid-March, driven by calls for greater civil liberties. The strife followed similar protests across North Africa that toppled entrenched regimes in Tunisia and Egypt, led to conflict in Libya and caused unrest in Bahrain and Yemen.

The Council requested the Secretary-General to update it on the situation in Syrian within seven days.

Ban told reporters that he will do his best “to make an immediate and impartial report” to the Council as “this is in the interest of the whole international community” and urged President Assad to “listen more attentively” to the “many calls from the international community.”

The Council took note of Syria’s stated commitment to the implementation of reforms, but expressed regret over the lack of progress, calling on the Government to carry out the promised political changes.
