“People do not have clean water and as you will know, one of the lifesaving interventions of UNICEF is to provide clean water. So here today we managed to install a water bladder that can help this community here, living on this roadside to have access to clean water every day.”

For a second year in a row heavy monsoon floods are ravaging parts of Pakistan. So far 5.4 million people have been affected, almost 2.7 million of whom are children.
One of the worst hit areas is Sindh province in southern Pakistan. More than 1.8 million people are living in an estimated 6,000 temporary settlements often in makeshift camps on high ground such as embankments and beside roads.
UNICEF Pakistan Representative, Dan Rohrmann, visited Badin District to witness first-hand the dire situations of families here.

In one of the make-shift tents by the side of the road Rohrmann met 3-year old Shama who is suffering from diarrhoea and vomiting.
Her mother explained,

North of Badin City, more than 300 families are sheltering at a school. Since becoming a relief camp, however, flood waters have crept into the school grounds and flooded the toilets. Families now have to wade through knee-deep, possibly contaminated water, to get in and out of the camp.
Bibi Hawwa explained,

At the same camp, Muhammad Yousuf, showed Rohrmann his infections and explained,

UNICEF is rapidly scaling up its emergency response in Badin District and other flood-affected areas.

Currently, UNICEF is reaching more than 51,000 people with clean water through daily water tinkering. The scale of the crisis huge and ongoing assistance will be crucial to help those whose lives have once again been hit by natural disaster.
