3. SOUNDBITE (English) Prince William, Duke of Cambridge:
“UNICEF are leading the way and they are doing a fantastic job. Sadly, there is still a lot more to do and that’s why we are here today to try our best to put UNICEF ahead of the system again and get as many people as possible realizing that a truly horrendous situation is going on in East Africa.”
4. Tilt down, a fork-lift taking down a pallet of supplies in the UNICEF Supply Division warehouse to the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and the Crown Prince and Crown Princess of Denmark
5. SOUNDBITE (English) Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge:
“It’s really just how shocking the situation still is. It’s been going on for 100 days or so and it’s really still on-going and a huge amount still has to happen with hundreds of children still malnourished at the moment. Hopefully, we can do as much as we can.”
10. SOUNDBITE (English) Prince William, Duke of Cambridge:
“The rains have come now and as hopefully, you’ve all heard from the UNICEF brief, that doesn’t necessarily mean that things are going to get better at all. In fact, disease becomes a huge issue. So it’s very much a case of anyone who can do anything to help, please do.”
6. Various shots, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and the Crown Prince and Crown Princess of Denmark at the packing line with UNICEF warehouse staff
7. SOUNDBITE (English) Mary, Crown Princess of Denmark:
“The nutritional kits, that’s what is saving lives out there. And it’s surprising to think that so little can save so many lives. So one of those boxes we packed, that will reach a thousand people.”

Storyline

This week, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge made a special visit to UNICEF’s Emergency Supply Centre in Denmark, to help put the global spotlight back on the crisis in East Africa.

The East Africa region is currently experiencing its worst drought in decades. Over 13 million people, half of whom are children, are currently in need of urgent help.

Along with the Crown Prince and Crown Princess of Denmark, their highnesses are seeking to raise awareness of the crisis and encourage the public to support UNICEF’s appeal for funds to help millions of children at risk.

UNICEF staff showed how essential life-saving supplies including therapeutic food, water, nutritional supplies, vaccines and medical kits are sourced, packed and distributed to areas of need.

SOUNDBITE (English) Mary, Crown Princess of Denmark:
“The nutritional kits, that’s what is saving lives out there. And it’s surprising to think that so little can save so many lives. So one of those boxes we packed, that will reach a thousand people.”

So far, the public has been hugely generous in their response to UNICEF’s appeal, and life-saving supplies are really getting through to children and families affected.

But, as the situation is still deteriorating, more needs to be done in order to help the many thousands of children who are in need of urgent nutritional and medical help.
